The
intense two-day Every 15 Minutes program focuses
on high school students, raising awareness about the reality and consequences
of drinking and driving, and inspiring students to make informed, smart
decisions as they prepare to celebrate prom and graduation.
Tuesday,
participants will reenact an alcohol-related traffic collision from
approximately 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Maple Lane in front
of Big Bear High School.
The
multi-casualty collision scenario will involve students from Big Bear High
School and first responders from Big Bear Fire Department, California Highway
Patrol, and the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station. Additionally, throughout the school
day, the Grim Reaper will remove one student from class Every 15
Minutes and their obituary will be read, representing one more
death from an alcohol related traffic collision.
The second day, Wednesday June 3rd, will consist of an
assembly and mock funeral for the living dead and students killed in the
previous day’s crash. The assembly will begin at 9:30 A.M. and conclude at approximately 11:30 A.M., with a challenge to the
entire student body to make responsible choices when alcohol is involved.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant
from the Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and generous
donations from multiple local businesses and service organizations. Media personnel are encouraged to attend and
report this event to our community.
