5:00 P.M. Monday August 27, 2018 announced that most of Big Bear Valley experienced an unexpected electrical outage, affecting approximately 13,030 customers. The affected area expanded from the south-side of Big Bear Lake, from northwest at Big Bear Dam to the east at Lake Williams.

Five o’clock traffic, signal lights, valley businesses, computers went dark, routers beeped incessantly, TV reception went out, out of charge cell phones were useless, the local radio station was bomb-barded with calls, and basically Big Bear Valley went silent, early evening.  Personally, I took advantage of getting some peaceful sleep!

Immediately, BVES crews responded and were able to determine the location of the problem. Crews were able to sectionalize the affected section and re-energized the majority of customers by 6:28 P.M. The remaining customers were energized two minutes later at 6:30 PM. Initial reports were that a bird had caused the interruption, but crews are still investigating and repairing the affected area and the cause of the outage is not known at the time of the release to the press, Tuesday noon.
