Motorcyclist Traffic Collision

Running Springs, California Friday March 4, 2016, at approximately 11:08 A.M., Arrowhead Area California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene of a traffic collision on SR-18, north of Upper Waterman Canyon Road.

Michael Garcia (P-1), a 35 year old resident of Artesia California, was riding a black and blue 2001, Honda CBR 929 (V-1) motorcycle, northbound on SR-18.

Gustavo Puineda-Vivar (P-2), a 20 year old resident of Crestline California, was driving a silver Toyota Tacoma (V-2) southbound on SR-18.

P-1 was negotiating a right curve, approaching the location of V-2.  Due to P-1’s unsafe speed for the conditions, Garcia was unable to safely negotiate the right curve and allowed motorcycle to travel into the down bound lane of State Route 18, directly in the path of the Toyota.

Honda motorcycle (V-1) collided with Toyota Tacoma (V-2) head-on.  (P-1) was fully ejected from V-1 and sustained fatal injuries as a result of this traffic collision.  The motorcycle (V-1) immediately caught on fire resulting into a total loss.

Puineda-Vivar (P-2) sustained a laceration to his right hand.  Toyota Tacoma sustained major front end traffic collision damage and both of its airbags deployed, as a result of this traffic collision.

Erika R. Kearney, a 23 year old resident of Lake Arrowhead, California was a passenger in V-2.  Kearney did not claim any injuries as a result of the traffic collision.

CHP Officer Chris Bates, ID 18392, is conducting the investigation.
