“It’s OUTRAGEOUS that the Legislature voted to
take money from victims of foreclosure
crisis.”
National Mortgage Settlement
- - > to
backfill its budget deficit
REALLY?!!
In 2012, California received $410 million
as part of the National Mortgage Settlement in
response to the foreclosure crisis. This settlement was intended to help
homeowners avoid foreclosure on their homes. Instead,
the Governor transferred the money to state agencies in order to cover their
budget deficits.
This July a state appeals court
ordered the state to repay $331 million of this money and use it to help the
victims of this crisis as it was intended to do.
Shockingly, the Legislature recently passed (and the Governor just signed) Senate Bill 861, a bill that rescinds the court order
to give the money back to the victims and instead says it's okay
that the government used the money to backfill its budget deficit. It's
incredible that the Legislature would take money out of the pockets of these
homeowners, especially when the state has a multi-billion budget surplus this
year.
Check
out this video of my
debate with the Department of Finance about how the Legislature is improperly
diverting this money.

Listen carefully to Obernolte
when he asks, “Have you read the language in the National
Mortgage Settlement ?
Listen carefully at the
response, “…. Not sure what you’re
referring to…”
