Summit Fire
Update
City of Big BearLake City Manager Jeff
Mathieu
“We’re grateful for the quick and thorough response from the USFS and their
incident commanders, immediately upon the outbreak of fire. The valiant efforts
of hand crews and firefighters, was exceptional. The overwhelming attack by the
aviation contingent led to a substantial containment of the fire, away from
residents and structures. The City deeply appreciates all efforts by our first
responders on the Summit Fire.”
City of Big BearLake Mayor David
Caretto
“I
second that; the response has been tremendous and the businesses in town
(restaurants and lodges) have been very generous to those at the Convention
Center at Big Bear Lake and to the firefighters. It is just how we do
things in Big Bear Valley!!
U.S. FOREST SERVICE, San Bernardino, California
The Summit Fire reported Sunday afternoon south of Big
Bear Lake near Snow Summit Mountain Resort in the San Bernardino National
Forest, is 30 percent contained with 100 acres still involved in the burning
area. Fire Fighters are challenged by steep rugged terrain, rolling debris and
numerous standing dead and burned trees. The cause of the fire is under
investigation.
Providing for public
and Fire Fighter Safety is one of the primary objectives on the Summit Fire
Incident. Today fire crews and sawyers are working to mitigate the standing
dead and burned trees within the fire area. Also, they want to improve and
extend the containment lines around the fire. Due to better mapping and the
emphasis on Fire Fighter Safety, the
containment percentage has been revised to 30 percent.
All evacuations were lifted 2:00 P.M. Monday, August
24th. Per Big Bear Valley Unified School District, all schools with
the exception of Fallsvale School remained closed Tuesday August 25th

needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres
of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and
maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands
the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each
year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the
nation's clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The
agency has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 80 percent
of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of which 100 million acres
are urban forests where most Americans live. Learn more at http://www.fs.usda.gov/sbnf
