shows epicenter of the M7.1 July 5, 2019 southern California earthquake (USGS)
Friday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Ridgecrest and was felt throughout
southern California. This earthquake followed the 6.4 magnitude foreshock in
the same region on Thursday.
Trona, CA is near the epicenter of Thursday's foreshock and is reported to have
suffered significant damages. This afternoon, Supervisor Lovingood released an
informative update for Trona residents that can be found here.
The USGS has created an updates page to share the latest information on the survey and mapping
of the two earthquakes. The Earthquake Hazards Program by the USGS is also a great tool for learning
how to stay safe during a quake and how to prepare for the event of one.
The USGS provides science about the natural hazards that threaten lives
and livelihoods, such as water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources
that we rely on. Their scientists develop new methods and tools to supply
timely, relevant, and useful information about the Earth and its processes.
Congressman Paul Cook is a member of the House Natural Resources and Armed

He served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the
U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star
and two Purple Hearts.
