BIG BEAR LAKE, CA -
The Friends of The Big Bear Alpine Zoo announce their 5th Annual
BLUES FOR THE ZOO music festival celebrating this unique mountain animal-rescue
sanctuary. BLUES FOR THE ZOO
takes place Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Big Bear Lake Swim Beach
Outdoor Amphitheater featuring a line-up of world-class artists.
BLUES FOR THE ZOO’s lakeside setting offers a scenic
backdrop for an afternoon of internationally recognized musicians along with a
selection of local arts and crafts and a freshly prepared food/beverage
menu. Headlining the day of music will
be the Otis Taylor Band, a talent
described by the Los Angeles Times as “blending the austerity of Delta blues
with the expansiveness of free jazz….ancient-sounding, avant-garde, trance blues.” Sometimes compared to
John Lee Hooker, Taylor is also an intriguing songwriter, creating material
that explores the African-American experience.” His topical music has been
heard in the films “Public Enemies” (with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale) and
“Shooter” (with Mark Wahlberg). He has
twice won the Downbeat Critics Poll for Blues
Album of the Year and leads a unique group that features banjo and violin.
Janiva Magness,
an incendiary vocalist who delivers scorching intensity with a dose of personal
introspection, is also on the bill.
Magness has been honored with 22 Blues Music Awards, from The Blues
Foundation in Memphis, including four wins as Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year. With 10 solo recordings to her credit, this
passionate singer delivers an earthy and raw stage performance, delving deep
into a catalog of original and classic blues.
Opening the festival will be Bonne Musique Zydeco. Specializing in
the Creole music of Louisiana, this group draws on the traditional music of New
Orleans mixed with a taste of the blues, creating their own danceable blend.
With the rhythm of accordion and rub board as a foundation, their kinetic brand
of blues-based Cajun style is a perfect jump-start to any roots-honoring
festival.
