The Big Bear High School Performing
Arts Department presents Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday, November 2, 3, and 4 at 7:00 P.M., and Sunday, November
5, at 2:00 P.M. at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center.
The story of The Crucible follows a married man, John Proctor, who decides
to break off his involvement with a younger Abigail Williams. She leads other
local girls in an occult rite to wish death upon John’s wife, Elizabeth. When
the ritual is discovered, the girls are brought to trial. Accusations begin to
fly, and a literal witch-hunt gets underway. Before long, Elizabeth is
suspected of witchcraft, and John's attempt to defend her only makes matters
worse.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in response to the
McCarthyism era in the United States, which lasted from the late 1940s to the
mid 1950s. During that time investigations were launched into “Un-American
Activities” of thousands of American citizens – politicians, public figures,
and celebrities. This 1950’s witch-hunt resulted in, among other atrocities,
the Hollywood blacklist. This was the practice of denying employment to entertainment
professionals during the mid-20th century because they were accused of having
Communist ties or sympathies.
The Crucible won the 1953 Tony Award
for Best Play. Miller originally called the play Those Familiar Spirits before
renaming it as The Crucible. The word "crucible" is defined as a
severe test or trial; or, a container in which metals or other substances are subjected
to high temperatures. The characters whose moral standards prevail in the face of
death, such as John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse, symbolically refuse to sacrifice
their principles or to falsely confess.

Ollila as Susanna Walcott, Lainey Mayer as Ann Putnam and Martha Corey, Noah
Giddens as Thomas Putnam, Aubrey Hull as Mercy Lewis, Trinity Lowe as Mary
Warren, Jacob Walker as John Proctor, Star Walker as Rebecca Nurse, Ricky
Steward as Giles Corey, Ely Dawson as Reverend John Hale, Andromedae Jackson as
Elizabeth Proctor, Jadon Lopez as Francis Nurse, Andrew Burton as Ezekiel
Cheever, Trinity Walker as Marshall John Willard, Hannah Magers as
Judge Hathorne, Lauren Davis as Deputy-Governor Danforth, and Logan Greene
as
Hopkins.
The show is directed by Brian Adams. The crew includes stage manager
Savannah Hull, costume manager, Marina DeMarco, and props manager Lainey Mayer.
The technical team is: Dave and Paula Delay – lighting designers; Robert Colver
– sound engineer, and Bob Perry – set construction foreman.
The The Crucible show is recommended for those 13 years old and
above.
