Sheriff John McMahon

 

The CRPA has proudly recognized Sheriff McMahon as their Outstanding Sheriff for 2016. Sheriff McMahon will be presented the distinguished award at the California Rifle and Pistol Association 141st Annual Awards Banquet, February 27th, in Orange County.

John McMahon’s career began with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, as a Patrol Deputy at the Needles Police/Sheriff’s Station. There McMahon was assigned to the Victorville and Hesperia Patrol Stations. Once promoted to sergeant, he worked supervisory positions at the West Valley Detention Center and Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center jail facilities, as well as the Victorville City Station and Employee Resources.

In preparation for a career in law enforcement, John McMahon earned an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Victor Valley College, as well as a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute and University. 

McMahon is certified as a Jail Manager through the American Jail Association, and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Police West Point Leadership Program. In 2007, he was inducted into the Victor Valley College Alumni Hall of Fame.

With total devotion in law enforcement, John McMahon has more than 30 years of experience. Lieutenant McMahon was second in command of the San Bernardino County Sheriff Academy and the Fontana Sheriff Station. As Captain, he was commander of the Central Detention Center, the Apple Valley Station, and West Valley Detention Center. As Deputy Chief, McMahon oversaw the Detentions and Corrections Bureau, followed by an assignment to manage the Desert Patrol Bureau. Then McMahon was promoted to Assistant Sheriff, overseeing Operations.

In December 2012, John McMahon was appointed to Sheriff by the San Bernardino County Sheriff and the County Board of Supervisors to fulfill the unexpired term of San Bernardino County Sheriff, vacated by Sheriff Gary Penrod.  June 21, 2013, the new Sheriff John McMahon formally announced his candidacy for San Bernardino County Sheriff and on June 3, 2014, he won in the primary election.

Sheriff McMahon, a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, issues CCW licenses to law abiding citizens in the county. In a recent interview with the Daily Press, it was stated that “Sheriff (John) McMahon’s stand on the topic is, that if the applicant meets the requirements set forth, is of good moral character, has no felonies and is a resident of the county, there’s no reason why they would be denied.”

Recently, Sheriff McMahon showed incredible poise and dedication to bring the suspects to justice in the face of December 2nd terror attacks on San Bernardino County employees where 14 people were killed and 21 were wounded. McMahon’s leadership and the bravery of Sheriff’s Deputies, has been hailed across the country as a success even in the wake of such devastation.

Married for 25 years John and wife Shelly reside in the High Desert with their two daughters, Abby and Allie. Residents of San Bernardino County as well as numerous associates throughout Southern California, hold John McMahon, in highest regard. 

The distinguished award of California Rifle and Pistol Association Outstanding Sheriff for 2016 to San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon, is a well-deserved recognition.
