FOBBAZ was formed in 1989 as a non-profit public benefit corporation whose purpose is to support the Big Bear Alpine Zoo through: educating the public regarding treatment, protection, and conservation of wildlife; recruiting and coordinating zoo volunteers; and fundraising.

In 1996, a three-Grizzly Bear family, including Tutu, Ayla and Harley, arrived at their home for life, at the Big Bear Zoo.   The Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo (FOBBAZ) have successfully raised funds, to help build the Bears new enclosure at the relocated/new Big Bear Alpine Zoo, with generous donations from the Big Bear Lake community, and throughout the United States.  The Inland Empire Chapter of Harley Davidson owners played a crucial role in raising money and donating labor to build the new enclosure for Tutu, Ayla and Harley Bears.
