Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank the men and
women of our Armed Forces who have served to keep us safe and guard the
freedoms enshrined in our founding documents — now, and throughout our
history.
In his first inaugural address, President Ronald Reagan shared the
personal story of Private Martin Treptow, a young soldier who lost his
life in World War I. On his person, they found a diary that included
these words:
“America must
win this war. Therefore I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I
will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue
of the whole struggle depended on me alone.”

The
patriot spirit described by Private Treptow is one that still defines the
resolve and character of those men and women of every generation who have
served in our nation’s military. They answered the call to defend our
liberty and their dedication remains an example of valor and
selflessness, whether here at home or across the oceans.

Many of our communities will have parades or ceremonies this weekend.
While we set aside November 11th of each year as a day to
honor and express thanks to current and former service members and their
families, it is also a reminder to do so all year round.
We cannot fully repay them for the sacrifices they have made, but we can
do all we can to let them know how grateful we are and that they are
never forgotten.
To all those who have served and continue to serve, thank you.
