Traffic Stop Leads to a
Deputy Involved Shooting
Late
Saturday, May 4, 2019, morning, when a Sheriff Deputy of the San Bernardino County Sheriff/Needles Station while on duty driving a Sheriff’s Department official
unit near Lenwood Road in
Barstow, California, another vehicle almost
collided with the deputy’s vehicle. The officer
conducted a traffic stop.
A passenger
in the vehicle, Antwon Rivers was armed with a handgun but fled on foot, away
from the deputy. The officer ordered Rivers to stop running and drop the
weapon. Rivers ignored the deputy’s orders and turned and fired his handgun
numerous times at the Sheriff Deputy. Fearing for his own safety and the safety
of the public, the officer involved shooting occurred. Rivers was able to avoid
detention by the Sheriff Deputy and ran behind a large vacant building.
The Specialized Enforcement Detail (SED) of the
San Bernardino County Sheriff
Department responded to the scene and conducted a search
for Rivers. The SED Deputies located Rivers hiding in a bathroom, unhurt.
Rivers was transported and booked into the Barstow jail for PC 664/187 –
Attempted Murder on a Police Officer.
Antwon
Rivers 35 years old, is a resident of Barstow, California.
San Bernardino County Sheriff of the
Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail responded to the scene to
conduct the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with
