8th District Congressman Jay Obernolte emphasizes “Our country is facing a fentanyl crisis.
Since 2018, San Bernardino County has seen the number of fentanyl related deaths
per year increase a shocking 656 percent, with the San Bernardino County Sheriff Inland Regional
Narcotics Enforcement Team responding to 106 fentanyl
related calls involving 108 victims and 97 deaths since February 2021.
Four of these victims of fentanyl were juveniles and the average age of victims
was just 32.”
Congressman Jay Obernolte continues about the Ongoing Fentanyl Crisis,
“This rapid increase in fentanyl in our community is directly
linked to the crisis at our southern border.
In 2021, the San Bernardino County Sheriff Inland Regional
Narcotics Enforcement Team seized 769 pounds of fentanyl found to mostly
originate from Mexico. At the same time, fentanyl seizures at our southern
border increased by 134% last year. It is critical that we secure our southern
border to stop the flow of drugs into our community.
>Last
May (2021), I sent a formal letter to the President calling for answers to this
problem, and late last year I supported efforts to fund completion of the
border wall. Last week, I once again took to the House floor to call for action
to fight against the spread of fentanyl in our community.”
