San Bernardino County Sheriff Aviation Unit responded Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 4:20 P.M., to 9-1-1 call, from a male subject reporting a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The subject reported he was in a wooded area somewhere on a mountain. The subject’s cell phone generated coordinates to his location. A San Bernardino County Sheriff 40-King #35 helicopter and Sheriff Patrol Deputies responded to the area provided by the subject’s cell phone.  The helicopter crew located the injured victim in a remote mountainous area, where it was necessary to execute a hoist rescue.

The 40K5 Aviation Unit, of pilot Deputy Doug Brimmer, Crew Chief Deputy Brad Heard, and Hoist Rider Deputy Lauren Abernathy, flew to the location of the injured man. Upon their arrival to the area of the victim, they noticed the location was being used to grow marijuana, with several marijuana plants growing along the hillsides.

Sheriff Deputy Abernathy was lowered approximately 78’ to the subject, with a gunshot wound to his lower leg. The Deputy placed the injured man into a rescue harness and recovered the handgun.

The subject was hoisted up to the helicopter and flown to a landing zone nearby. The subject was transferred to a California Highway Patrol helicopter with a paramedic onboard; then flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.

The weapon was turned over to Victor Valley Sheriff Deputies for processing.
