Big Bear Lake Bridge

Wednesday's fatality is the first accidental death at the Big Bear Bridge.
Late Wednesday evening April 6th at
approximately 11:15 P.M., Big Bear
Sheriff Deputies and Big Bear Fire Personnel, responded to a call that a subject
reportedly fell from the structure of the State Route-18 at the Big Bear Bridge
over Big Bear Dam.
The victim, identified as 27-year-old Craig Cowie, was
a resident of Sugarloaf. He was hiking with friends in the ravine below the Big
Bear Bridge. It was reported that Cowie climbed onto the support arch of the
bridge and accidentally fell approximately 150 feet to the ground. Cowie
sustained fatal injuries as a result of the fall.
Big Bear Fire Responders recovered the body, using a z-rig rope system. The San Bernardino
Sheriff/Coroner, responded to the scene and notification of the fatality was
made to Cowie’s next of kin.
