San Bernardino, California____The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists that travel experts are predicting record breaking numbers of motorists (47 million Americans) on the highways for the Fourth of July holiday.

This year the fourth is Wednesday, in the middle of next week which has prompted many people to take time off work to enjoy the festivities and travel to destinations in and out of California.  Reports predict that traffic will be heaviest on Tuesday afternoon, July 3rd, between 3:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M.

Below are some helpful travel tips to make your trip a little more pleasant:

*     The best time to leave is early before workday traffic on July 3.

        There will be another break in traffic later that evening.

*     If you travel on July 4 – leave between 4:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M.

            to minimize time spent in traffic.

*    The worst time to travel is mid-afternoon on Tuesday July 3 and Wednesday 4.

*    Firework shows – try and leave the event as late as possible – after 10:00 P.M.

*    Remember that Sunday, July 8, will be the day that everyone is returning home!

       Leave very early or return on Monday, July 9th.

*    Remember – designate a sober driver, have a full tank of gas, cell phone and plenty of patience.
