MEMORIAL Commemoration

Monday MEMORIAL DAY May 30th, the Big Bear Valley Marine Corps League Detachment #1038 and The American Legion Post #584 together have coordinated the 2016 Memorial Day Ceremony, commemorating the sacrifices of the United States Military Personnel, who have died in our Nation’s service.   

The Marine Corps League and The American Legion Post invite everyone to join Veterans and Families of Armed Service Personnel and 1st Responders, past and present to participate in the procession and ceremony at Big Bear Lake Veterans Park. 

The Memorial Day morning ceremony will begin on-time, at 10:00 A.M. with a bagpipe tribute, performed by Major Nelson Reynolds, United States Air Force Retired. Speaking for the Big Bear Valley, we pay homage to Major Nelson for the many years he has supported the Big Bear Valley Memorial Day Ceremony with his bagpipe renditions. 

Everyone will enjoy Special Music by the Unaccompanied Minors by our own Big Bear High School Students, and Students of Director Diane Sloan Kubeja.   

Other special ceremony participants will be: Marine Corps League Color Guard and American Legion Honor Guard, The Scout Troop 1468, the Boy Scout Troop 49 & 1845, Cub Scout Troop 49, the Big Bear Mortuary, Reverend Tom Goodman of the American Legion Post #584, the City of Big Bear Lake Mayor David Caretto, and the Women’s Auxiliary American Legion Post 584.     

The keynote Memorial Day Speaker is Sergeant Major Michael J. Hendges. The Major comes to Big Bear Lake from Twenty-nine Palms where recently he is Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twenty-nine Palms, California for duty as the MAGTFTC / MCAGCC Sergeant Major.  Previously, Major Hendges was 3rd Marine Logistics Group, Camp Kinser, Okinawa Group Sergeant Major, since 2014. 

Hendges personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 Combat Distinguishing Devices (5th award), Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon (2nd award), Good Conduct medal (8th award), Sea Service Deployment ribbon (10th award) and the Drill Instructor ribbon.

The Big Bear Lake Veterans Park is located in Big Bear Lake next-door to and west of Community Church by the Lake, at Knickerbocker Road & Big Bear Boulevard.  It’s suggested that guests arrive early to locate parking spaces at the church or across the street at First Mountain Bank.
