College: Is It Worth the Time and Expense?

The Eleanor Stem Allen Memorial Speech Contest, better known as the Speech Trek contest, will be Monday February 23 at 7:00 P.M. The annual speech contest for high school age students is sponsored by the Big Bear Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).  AAUW is once again proud to partner with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters, who will produce the contest.

The contest is open to all girl and boy high school students who want to compete for cash prizes.  Contestants will write and present a 5-6 minute speech on the topic, College: Is It Worth the Time and Expense?

In 2013, Former US Secretary of Education, William Bennett released his book, Is College Worth it? On the inside cover, the following description appears:

“For many students, a bachelor's degree is considered the golden ticket to a more financially and intellectually fulfilling life. But the disturbing reality is that debt, unemployment, and politically charged pseudo learning are more likely outcomes for many college students today than full-time employment and time-honored knowledge.”

The public is invited to come to the inspiring evening and hear the youth share their voices on this timely and relevant topic. Admission is free

The Big Bear Municipal Water District (MWD) is located at 40524 Lakeview Drive, Big Bear Lake.
