  Holiday Traffic DELAYS

State of California Department of Transportation, San Bernardino Caltrans District 8 ____

is advising motorists that they may encounter travel delays over the Labor Day weekend, September 4 through 7. Labor Day weekend is historically associated with the end of summer during which, people get behind the wheel to reach their holiday destinations.

· Interstates 10, 40 and 15 are major thoroughfares to resort locations in and out of California and all have reduced lanes and construction work that may affect your travel time.

Following is a synopsis of the roadwork and details of the lane reductions that may impact your travel times:

· Interstate 10 (I-10): Heavy rains and mud flow on July 19, 2015 resulted in the wash out of eastbound I-10 near Desert Center. Currently there is one lane in each direction with eastbound traffic shifted to the westbound roadbed. Emergency repairs are currently underway to rebuild the bridge on the eastbound 10 with completion expected by the end of September 2015.

· Interstate 40 (I-40): A project to rebuild (3) bridges (Haller Wash, Rojo Wash, and Clipper Valley Wash) near Essex which are located approximately twenty miles east of Kelbaker Road to Essex Road. In two locations there are similar traffic shifts in which the eastbound I-40 traffic is diverted to the westbound I-40 roadbed with one lane in each direction. The travel lanes are separated by channelizers and k-rail depending on the location.

· Interstate 15 (I-15): Two projects are still under construction in the Cajon Pass/ Devore area for paving and interchange improvements. Southbound I-15 has crossover lanes from north of State Route 138 to north of Kenwood Avenue in which lanes are shifted from the southbound to the northbound roadbed causing some traffic delays. I-15 in Devore has reduced lanes. Both projects have reduced speed limits to 60 miles per hour.

Caltrans estimates up to a four (4) hour delay on Monday, September 7, 2015 between 1:00 p.m. and midnight for the westbound direction of travel on I-10 and I-40 in the areas with the lanes reduced to one in each direction.

CALTRANS - Added information for Cajon Pass motorists…

Delays up to 1 ½ hours are expected in the southbound direction of I-15 on Friday afternoon.  Local traffic can save time by using State Route (SR) 138 and Cajon Boulevard to bypass holiday traffic in the Cajon Pass.  A newly constructed temporary auxiliary lane gives southbound I-15 traffic to the opportunity to drive between the SR 138 on ramp and the Cleghorn off ramp without entering the congested traffic lanes.  There is also an event at the San Manuel Amphitheatre (Live Nation) in Glen Helen that begins Thursday (9/3) and lasts through Monday (9/7) –

Following are some Tips to Make Your Labor Day weekend travel safe and enjoyable:

Use the restroom before you travel to remote areas without facilities.
