Grand
Theft Auto &
Assault
with a Deadly Weapon
Early Wednesday morning (October 25, 2017,
at 12:33 A.M. San Bernardino County
Sheriff Deputies and Hesperia Police
Officers received a report of a stolen vehicle from the Hidden Tavern
located on Main Street. The owner of the stolen vehicle was the passenger in a
friend’s Toyota Camero, when they located and began following his stolen
vehicle eastbound on Main Street in Hesperia.
The San
Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy responding to the call observed the stolen
vehicle traveling east on Main Street and with lights and siren activated,
attempted to stop the Toyota Camero. As
the driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to turn south onto E Avenue, the
driver lost control and then ran from the scene. The driver of the Camero
stopped in the eastbound lanes of Main Street, exited the vehicle and began
chasing the suspect. The passenger, Patrick Chambers, exited the vehicle and
was standing in the open door of the Toyota Camero as Sheriff Deputies approached.
Unbeknownst to the responding San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy,
the stolen vehicle had a mechanical malfunction causing the vehicle to deposit
engine oil on the roadway for approximately 1000 feet. As the Deputy attempted
to stop near the Camero, the patrol car slid, unable to stop, hitting the passenger side of
the Toyota Camero and struck Patrick Chambers.
Responding San
Bernardino County Sheriff Deputies immediately called for medical aid and began
CPR, but Patrick was pronounced deceased at the scene.
