County Sheriff Aviation Crew and airship ‘40 KING #1’ are keeping active recently
with rescuing hikers incidents. San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputies from the
Fontana Station, Friday, January 10, 2020 at 5:30 P.M. received a report of a lost
hiker on Mt Baldy in the Ice House Canyon area. Immediately, a request went to the
Sheriff's Aviation Crew to assist in an aerial rescue. County Sheriff ‘40 KING #1’ and crew, consisting
of Pilot Deputy Doug Brimmer, Flight Officer Deputy Cody Korkotsakis and Reserve
Deputy/Air Medic Steve Miller.
The Flight Crew
utilized night vision goggles to locate Daniel Evans at the 8,000 foot-level.
The steep mountainous terrain consisted of snow and ice, with near freezing
temperatures. Evans had traveled approximately two hours in the snow at night,
while wearing tennis shoes and light clothing. Evans complained of pain to his
feet and could no longer continue hiking. Due to the circumstances, it was
determined that a hoist rescue was needed.
Mount Baldy or Mt Baldy, formerly Camp Baynham and Camp Baldy, is
an unincorporated community in the San Gabriel Mountains, in San Bernardino

Deputy Korkotsakis
lowered Deputy Miller down to Evans and placed him into a rescue harness. Evans
was hoisted into the helicopter, and was transported by ambulance to San
Antonio Regional Hospital for hypothermia.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff Department would
like to remind the public about the dangers of hiking in hazardous conditions
such as steep, rugged, mountainous terrain covered with snow and ice. Without
crampons (a specific type of traction device for ice climbing) and an ice axe,
along with the proper training to use this equipment, this type of activity can
lead to serious injury or death.
