Assemblyman Obernolte affirms, ‘… not a single Veteran in
this home
may ever be involuntarily displaced.’
STATE Assembly and Senate Agree
From the Assemblyman, “I wanted to update you on the status of
the Barstow Veterans Home. As of Thursday, June 4, 2020,the State Legislature’s
2020-21 Budget has rejected Governor Newsom’s proposal calling for the closure
of the Barstow Veterans Home.”
“As Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee, I am very pleased that both
the Assembly and Senate have worked diligently together to safeguard our
Veterans and keep this vital facility open.
In addition, the Budget Committee has adopted budget
language to guarantee that not a single Veteran in this home may ever be
involuntarily displaced, and to ensure that in the future the usage of this
home may be changed only after extensive input from stakeholders. This
is a huge victory for our Veterans, their families, and our community.”
I am thrilled that both legislative houses have taken this critical step in
rejecting the Governor’s proposal to close our Veteran’s home – but we must
continue fighting until the final budget is passed on June 15th. I am now
cautiously optimistic that we will be successful in saving this vital facility
and keeping our promises to these veterans.
It is an honor to represent you.
