Governor’s State Spending
$$??
January
10, 2019__ State Assembly, Sacramento, California
Assemblyman Jay Obernolte 33rd District points out several issues
important to all Californians.
Governor
Newsom’s budget proposal contains a number of supportable provisions, including increases to our budget reserves
and additional funding for wildfire prevention and recovery efforts. Support
for early childhood education is clearly a worthy investment; however, we must
also ensure that children who benefit from expanded preschool go on to study in
quality classrooms in grades K-12.
The
Governor would also like to expand
Medi-Cal eligibility. MediCal is an important health care program that
millions of Californians rely on, but it is unfortunately broken, with large
numbers of Californians unable to see a doctor because of a lack of
participating providers. Expanding Medi-Cal eligibility before addressing the
program’s systemic problems would
further reduce access to care for the most vulnerable Californians.
As indicators of an economic slowdown grow stronger, we
must be cautious before committing to new ongoing state spending. Although I
applaud Governor Newsom for making progress towards paying down our ‘wall of
debt,’ we must remember that creating new programs that would only have to be
cut in a recession would be foolish.
It is an honor to represent you.
