Lakeside Luau for Hospital

_The primary purpose of the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District Foundation is to create activities and programs intended to raise charitable and grant funds from the community and beyond, to support the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District.  Our focus is to assist in providing funding for additional state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and health related programs.

The Bear Valley Community Healthcare District Foundation is sponsoring an End-of-Summer Luau, Sunday afternoon August 24 beginning at 2:00 P.M. located at Captain John’s Fawn Harbor and Marina.

The Summer Luau is a fundraiser event that will financially assist Bear Valley’s Hospital with important needs, necessary to provide quality patient services. At the present time there is a great need to replace old, broken gurneys with updated state-of-the-art gurneys.

Big Bear Lake NewsRoom Editor E T Russell visited with Bear Valley Community Healthcare District – Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Mary Norman RN, MSN about the need for new gurneys.

Gurneys are important to urgent patient care. When ambulatory patients requiring critical medical attention, arrive at the emergency room often they have been carried on stretchers and transferred to gurneys.

According to Wikipedia  -

A gurney, known as a trolley outside North America, is the U.S. term for a type of stretcher used in modern hospitals and ambulances in developed areas. Whereas a wheeled stretcher (known as a gurney, trolley, bed or cart) ….  Stretchers are primarily used in acute out-of-hospital care situations by EMS.

A fairly recent innovation is the addition of battery-powered hydraulics to raise and collapse the legs automatically. This eases the workload on EMS personnel, who are statistically at high risk of back injury from repetitive raising and lowering of patients.

Special "bariatric gurneys" are used for obese patients. These are both wider and have a higher weight capacity compared to standard equipment.

The BVCHD Emergency Unit is licensed for seven beds and the Operation Recovery has two beds. Therefore, at least seven gurneys are in need of replacement. The quality gurneys range in price between $1500 and $2000 a piece. The Foundation’s goal is to purchase as many as possible from the contributed funds.

At the Summer Luau Valley families and friends will enjoy beautiful Big Bear Lake live entertainment, outdoor games, and water sports such as kayaking and canoeing; while benefitting the Bear Valley Community Hospital.
