ROCK GROUP Visits BIG BEAR HIGH SCHOOL
Open Sky Music Foundation
Presents
The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers will be performing
for, and speaking with Big Bear students on Monday, April 20, 2015 at
10:00 A.M., utilizing the high school library for their stage.
Hailing from the East Los Angeles hamlet of Eagle Rock,
the roots-based Eagle Rock Gospel Singers deliver a dose of
American Music, with distinct influences of electric blues, alternative country
and twangy punk in their performances. The group’s focus is on early
traditional spirituals, but their original compositions ensure a contemporary
sound. Gospel music has often found a secular audience and artists
such as the Staple Singers and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are prime examples of that
crossover appeal.
The concert and question/answer session is being
coordinated by the Real World Project, a program of the Big
Bear Valley Education Trust. Guest speakers from all
areas of professional life are invited to explain their work-life experiences
and career journey with various high school classes. This musical
group will be sharing their talent and stories with the senior honors economics
class during the 40-minute musical workshop.
Formed in 2010, Eagle Rock
Gospel Singers have been performing around the southland in classic folk
venues like the Troubadour and hipster clubs (the Satellite, the Echo) plus
national stages such as Grand Performances at the California
Plaza. They led a successful crowd-funding campaign via Kick-starter
which generated enough capital to enter a professional recording studio and
hire respected producer Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, X) to oversee the
project. Wignall is known for his expertise in analog recording,
exactly what the band wanted to capture as they are ardent fans of older vinyl
recordings from the early 20th Century.
According to the bluegrass blog Grass
Clippings, “the band does an outstanding job of meshing an authentic old
time sound with modern instrumentation and phenomenal soul.”
