According to Terri Kasinga, Caltrans District 8 Chief Public and Legislative Affairs, there are two separate but simultaneous events/closures occurring on the San Bernardino Mountain roads during the month of October.

The full closure of State Route 38 between Snow Valley and the Big Bear Dam (Arctic Circle) was announced by Caltrans last week. Electronic signs were posted at the start of this week at the bottom of State Route 18, SR-330 and SR-38.

The Caltrans press release states: "Motorists should plan to utilize alternate routes during the full closure of SR-18 between Snow Valley Mountain Resort and the Big Bear Dam Oct. 6-31. Caltrans will be doing road work from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

"There will be no Friday closures," according to Caltrans spokesperson Terri Kasinga. "During the closure, motorists are advised to use SR-38 from I-10 Redlands and also SR-18 from Lucerne Valley on the backside."
"Be advised," Kasinga continued, "the paving and guardrail project on SR-38 is still active and that flagging will be in place, which may cause some minor delays on the SR- 38 detour."

The other road closure is at Camp Tahquitz. Commuter residents of Big Bear traveling up and down SR- SR-38 during the closure along Arctic Circle should be advised of a detour taking them onto Jenks Lake Road, along with delays encountered during the repaving project.

According to Philip Havins of Caltrans District 8, there is a pedestrian bridge slated to go in at Camp Tahquitz causing a seven- to eight-hour closure while cranes place the structure. The details have not been finalized as of yet, but Havins stated he believed the closure will be during the hours of 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and traffic will be rerouted around Jenks Lake Road during that time. More details will become available as the project nears.
